Duty of Obedience

Full definition — The duty of obedience requires board members to ensure the charter school operates within the law and stays true to its stated mission. This includes compliance with the charter agreement, state and federal regulations, and the school's own bylaws and policies. A board that acts outside its charter or ignores legal requirements risks sanctions, funding loss, or charter revocation.

Why It Matters

Charter schools operate under a specific contract with their authorizer. Board members must understand that deviating from the school's mission or violating laws can have immediate consequences, including loss of the charter itself.
