Compliance

Full definition — Compliance in charter school governance refers to the school's obligation to follow federal, state, and local laws, as well as the terms of its charter agreement and internal policies. This includes timely financial reporting, adherence to open meetings and public records laws, proper handling of student data under FERPA, special education requirements under IDEA, and any conditions set by the authorizer. Boards typically assign compliance monitoring to a committee or school administrator, but ultimate responsibility rests with the full board.

Why It Matters

Non-compliance can trigger corrective action, funding loss, or charter revocation. Board members must ensure robust systems are in place to track deadlines, reporting requirements, and regulatory changes.
