Authorizer

Full definition — An authorizer (sometimes called a sponsor) is the body responsible for approving charter school applications, monitoring school performance, and making renewal or revocation decisions. In North Carolina, the State Board of Education serves as the sole authorizer, with the Office of Charter Schools handling day-to-day oversight. Authorizers evaluate schools based on academic outcomes, financial health, and organizational compliance.

Why It Matters

The authorizer holds the ultimate power over a charter school's continued operation. Board members must understand what their authorizer expects, maintain a productive relationship with oversight staff, and ensure the school meets all reporting and performance requirements.
