Bylaws

Full definition — Bylaws are the foundational governance document that define how a charter school board is structured and how it conducts business. They typically address board composition, officer roles, term limits, meeting frequency, quorum requirements, voting procedures, committee structures, and amendment processes. Bylaws must be consistent with state law and the charter agreement. They are usually adopted at the school's founding and can be amended by board vote.

Why It Matters

Bylaws are the operating manual for the board. When disputes arise about procedures, authority, or decision-making, the bylaws are the first reference point. Every board member should read and understand them.
