Quorum
Full definition — A quorum is the minimum number of voting board members who must be present at a meeting for the board to legally transact business. Quorum requirements are typically defined in the school's bylaws and are usually a simple majority of the total board membership. Without a quorum, the board cannot vote on motions, approve budgets, or take any other official action. Members present may discuss items but must defer decisions to a future meeting.
Why It Matters
Actions taken without a quorum are legally invalid and can be challenged. Board members must understand quorum requirements and prioritize meeting attendance to ensure the board can function effectively.
