Public Records Law

Full definition — Public records laws require charter schools to make certain documents available for public inspection. In North Carolina, G.S. 132-1 et seq. defines public records broadly to include documents made or received in connection with the transaction of public business. This covers meeting minutes, financial records, contracts, and most correspondence. Schools must respond to records requests promptly and may only withhold records that fall under specific legal exemptions.

Why It Matters

Charter schools receive public funds and are subject to public accountability. Board members need to understand what records are public, how to handle requests, and the legal consequences of improperly withholding information.
